Bring Education Out (BE OUT): Recruitment

About Our Study

What is the name of the study?

Bring Education Outdoors: BE OUT Study

Who’s conducting the study?

Dr. Mariana Brussoni, Department of Pediatrics, University of British Columbia; BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute.

Why are we doing the study?

We are building the Outdoor Play and Learning in Schools educational tool for elementary school teachers who wish to enhance opportunities for children’s outdoor play and learning.

We aim to increase the intentional use of outdoor spaces in schools for playful learning.

Participation

What does your participation look like?

We need elementary school teachers who can collect and share materials such as photos and video recordings that demonstrate effective outdoor play and learning in schools.

Selected materials will be used in our tool and in other educational capacities to promote outdoor play and learning.

How the study is done?

  • After consenting, you will be asked to collect photos or videos of students engaging in outdoor play and learning.
  • You will submit them to a secure Dropbox link.
  • We will review collected photos and videos, and contact you if your submitted photos or videos are selected to be used in our tool.
  • Then, you will send us a media consent form signed by the guardian of each student in the photo or video.
  • For each selected material to be used in our tool, you will be paid $50.

What to include in the photos and videos?

  1. Materials should capture outdoor play and learning.
  2. Materials should be taken in Canada.
  3. Subjects in the photos or videos should be between the grades of kindergarten to grade 7 (elementary school age).
  4. Materials should not include personally identifiable information such as students’ name, age, or school name. Please avoid clear landmarks in images.
  5. Materials are not required to show students’ faces. If materials submitted do include a child’s face or belong to a particular student (e.g., artwork), your submission must include signed media consent from the guardian of each student who is visible in the submission.

How will the tool be shared?

You will have an opportunity to review a draft of our tool for approval before the launch. Once launched, it will be accessible at https://outsideplay.ca. You can be notified when the tool is launched.

How will your and your students’ identities be protected?

Your confidentiality will be respected. Materials published by the BC Children’s Hospital Play Outside UBC Lab will not include your or students’ names, schools, or grades.

Published materials will be respectful of the student, consistent with the educational purpose of the study.
